Carson is obviously wrong about men coming out of prison gay. There's such a thing as situational homosexuality, where men get together with men for lack of alternatives. But they remain heterosexual (if they were to begin with) and revert to type when they are free.

I've noticed something of the opposite when attending a Baptist college in the 1950s -- the ministerial students and music majors seemed stereotypically flamboyant. A dormitory passtime was to drag the paperboy into the showers and shave his pubes. The alumni magazine reveals that all these people went on to marriages and ministries. Obviously desires can be suppressed (with the help of a self-sacrificing wife) and conventional lives simulated, given motivation and heroic effort. When we discuss exgays, these people should be acknowledged. The question from our side is, Why bother? The joys of freedom are more attractive to me than the satisfactions of duty and sacrifice.
